Tom Collocott

Consolations

The Consolation, 2025 (detail)

Grace presents Consolations, the first solo-exhibition by Tom Collocott.

The works of Consolations emerge from artistic hermitage: a studio inscribed with years of expressive — often distressed — processes and its debris. Collocott pursues a practice that moves between revelation and concealment, searching, in a spirit akin to Edvard Munch, for a moment of solace.

Tom Collocott is an artist based in Tamaki Makaurau working on paintings and sculptures. Collocott graduated from the University of Auckland with a BFA (First class Honours) in 2021, and since then he has worked as a sculptural fabricator on multiple projects in Aotearoa and Australia, including works at the Dowse, Play-station and in Southbank, Victoria.

Consolations is accompanied by a text by Lily van Buskirk:

“…In the exhibition’s namesake sculpture, The Consolation, we are presented with either the end or the beginning of a narrative arc: the survivors or the uninitiated. Have these figures found one another, or are they about to lose one another? One hopes the former– that Giacometti’sWalking Man has found his mate out on the plains.…”
