The three-letter homonym is the title of the latest exhibition by Alex Laurie, an artist who crafts material and conceptual multivalences. In Nit, spoons and ladles transform into illusionary ciphers, as the translucent objects vie for invisibility in a minimal scullery. At the centre of the exhibition is a sculptural water feature, continuing Laurie’s long-standing interest in vessels such as ponds, troughs, and buckets.

Through his subtle use of materials, Laurie examines how we observe and interpret objects. Nit offers fragments of narrative in the movement of water, as the objects seem to animate themselves through slow, circular motion. Allusions surface too—of the quiet labour that sustains a gallery—as the artist’s vocation forms a backdrop to invention.
